Keto Diet

A few months ago in February I started following what is known as the Keto diet.  The Ketogenic diet also known as the Keto diet is a high fat low carbohydrate diet.  Protein is also controlled as part of this diet.  The purpose of this diet is to make your body burn fat instead of carbohydrates.  The diet can be used for weight loss, cancer treatment and seizure treatment.  I have noticed that since I have started the diet that I feel like I have more energy and less anxiety.  Below is a picture summary of the Keto diet.

Keto Diet

Prior to starting the diet I met with a dietitian who helped me decide how many net carbs, fat, and protein to eat each day.  Net carbs are carbohydrates minus fiber.  For my age and size I eat around 100 grams of protein each day.  I also eat 21 grams of net carbs each day.  I also need to eat at least 225 grams of fat each day so that I don’t lose too much weight.  I originally started at 175 grams of fat, but I was losing so much weight that the dietitian told me to add more fat.  The amount of fat that I eat each day is a minimum unlike the protein and net carbs which are maximum amounts for each day.

In order to eat so much fat each day I needed to start being creative with foods and drinks that I make.  One example of this is the omelet that I eat each morning.  It is just like a regular cheese omelette except for I add two tablespoons of heavy whipping cream to make it have more fat.  Sometimes I even add some butter on top of it.  Another example of this is a really high fat chocolate drink.  It is made up of: four ounces of heavy whipping cream, one tablespoon cocoa powder, two tablespoons MCT oil, two ounces of water, and ten drops of stevia.  Since it is so high fat I try to not drink it right before I go to bed or else it gives me stomach pain.
